What is the decision-making ability?

Decision making ability is an important component in mental well-being which leads to a successful life. “Setting achievable goals are vital to human success and achievements in life. It depends on efficient decision-making skills.” (Whatworkswellbeing.org, 2019) Decision making process can be define as a series of steps taken by an individual to determine the best course of action to meet their needs. Fundamentals of decision-making.

Using a step by step process helps to make more deliberate and thoughtful decision by organizing relevant information and defining alternatives. This approach increases the probability to get more satisfying and successful decisions.

Step 01 :Identify the decision

As the frst step you realiz that you need to make a decision. In here we have to clearly define the nature of the decision.

Step 02: Gather relevant information

In this step we have to collect some pertinent information.Fundamentals of decision-making.

  • The best source we can get it?
  • How to get it?

This step involves both internal and external “work”. Some information is internal such as seeking information through a process of self-assessment. Other information is external. Those can be find from online platforms, from books, from other people and other sources.

Step 03: Identify alternative

After collecting information, we can identify several possible paths of action, or alternatives. Alterative are most effectively generate by having one or more brain storming sessions. In addition, you can use your imagination and additional information to construct new alternatives. Finally, a list can be made with possible and desirable alternatives.

Step 04: Weigh evidences

Next step is drawing on your information and emotions to imagine what it would be like if you carried out each of alternative to the end. After you are confident that all alternatives have been considered, the alternatives need to be compared and evaluated against the decision criteria. Depending on the nature of the problem decision criteria may include like predicted outcomes, possible risk involved and estimated costs(monetary or other) etc. The comparison can do by creating decision matrix for to evaluate how the alternatives fit with your decision criteria or by mentally if there is no sufficient time to make notes.

Step 05: Choose among alternative

This is the most important step as well as the most difficult step in the decision making process. Once you weighed or evaluated all the possible alternatives you can select the most suitable alternative as your decision for the problem. In some cases, we can chose combination of alternatives.

The ability to take this step is what usually separates the leaders or the high achievers from rest of the people in the world. When n we taking decisions we have to be confident and stick to the definite conclusion that you have reached. Another important fact is to not wasting the valuable time. Make the decisions quickly, without delay and let it be the final.

Once after making the decision do not second-guess yourself, even for a movement. Second-guessing will cause to make doubt on your decisions and it creates uncertainty and reluctance in future decision making. A firm with your decision and do not look back.Lets think you are going to visit some country for a vacation. you have to make a decision whether you visit New Zealand or Sri Lanka. you have to think that you going for Nature or cultural activities you going to experience.

Step 6: Take action

This is the step that you implement your decision as soon as possible after finalizing your decision. If others also involv with implementing the decision these people also should aware about the decision and the expected outcomes. Step 07: Review your decisions and your consequences

So In this final step, we have to consider about the results or the outcomes of the implemented decision. If the intended outcomes or the results are not achieved you can repeat the process and do the needed changes on your decision.
